Low Chignon

This wedding hairstyle is a classic and with good reason – it’s stylish and sophisticated and will always look timeless. The style also suits a number of accessories – you can wear a tiara with it, or opt for a vintage inspired hairslide. A classic veil will also sit perfectly above the chignon and can be effortlessly removed later, leaving your hairstyle intact.

A low chignon works well with all kinds of wedding dress, but looks especially good with a gown with a detailed back, as you can show it off without your hair getting in the way. It is also a good choice if you want flatter your neck and décolletage. Katy from The Bridal Stylists suggests: “The low chignon is great if you’re going for an elegant or sophisticated look. It works well with vintage inspired themes and wedding dresses!”

Consider adding fresh flowers such as gypsophila to your low chignon style for more of a rustic spin on the look.

Loose

Loose hair worn down around your face and shoulders is the perfect choice for a bride with a relaxed wedding style.  It takes minimum effort and you don’t have to worry too much about it slipping or coming out of place during the day!Boho inspired loose wedding hair with a flower crown. Keep your loose wedding hairstyle interesting by adding accessories, or curling your hair to add definition and texture. A cute hairband works well if your wedding look is vintage inspired, but if you want a more rustic, boho feel, opt for an on-trend flower crown.

Half-Up Half-Down

This traditional wedding hairstyle really came into fashion when Kate Middleton opted to style her famously glossy brown locks this way for her wedding to Prince William in 2011.

This style works best if you have thicker hair, but don’t worry if you have fine hair – extensions added in for thickness can help you create the look. A number of accessories will work well with this look, including a tiara or a vintage inspired headband. If you want a simpler look, add a pretty hairslide to the back of your hair, or fix a veil to the centre of the hairstyle at the back.

This hairstyle is great with strapless gowns and sweetheart necklines as you can still show off the detail of your dress without being too exposed. Try backcombing at the crown to give this style more volume.

Side Bun

If you want something more contemporary than a chignon, consider a side bun. This is a quirky twist on a traditional style, and looks great with cute 50s inspired wedding dresses. Make the most of this fun style with some stand out hair accessories, or keep it simple and loose so you can literally let your hair down for the evening party.

Katy from The Bridal Stylists is a fan of the side bun: “These can be very flattering and work well if you want to show off the detail in your hair from the front as well as the back.”

Braided

Ever since Elsa exploded on to the scene in the Disney classic ‘Frozen’, flipping her braid over her shoulder as she belted out ‘Let It Go’, plaits have gone high-fashion. Victoria Beckham has been photographed with a sleek plait and Millie Mackintosh is often spotted sporting a braided up do, including on her wedding day!

Whether you want a braided up do or a flowing fishtail plait, braids will add a boho twist to your wedding day look and will work best with simple, flowy wedding dresses. Weave flowers or coloured ribbons into your plait for a quirky twist, or accessorise with a sparkly hair clip for a dose of glamour.

If you don’t like wearing your hair up, why not consider wearing your locks down, but with a braided section to pull some hair away from your face and interest to an otherwise simple style.

Victory Rolls

This look is the perfect choice for the retro inspired bride! Ask your wedding hairdresser to style your fringe and the front section of your hair into victory rolls for a 1950s feel.

“Vintage styling is sexy, glamorous, and classically beautiful so what a great choice for a bridal style! Two of our most popular styles for brides are Victory Rolls and the Beehive, both can either be achieved subtly or bolder to suit your personality and style for the day. The beehive looks great with a shorter gown perhaps above the knee in length with a looser straighter cut whilst the victory rolls look great with the opposite, a dress that is fitted at the waist with an A-line shape,” explains Amanda from vintage beauty experts Lipstick and Curls.

The rest of your hair can be pulled back into an up do or left loose in curls. Accessorise with a ribbon head band for a gorgeously retro finishing touch. Wear this look with bold red lipstick and a flirty tea-length dress with lots of petticoats for volume. Birdcage veils work well with retro hairstyles.

Beehive

If the 1960s is more your decade when it comes to fashion and hairstyles, consider styling your hair in a bridal beehive! This style is fun and fashionable, but also practical. It adds height to petite brides and will keep your hair away from your face – perfect if it’s a little bit unruly.

Accessorise with a sparkling head band, a few fresh flowers or a birdcage veil. Each choice of accessory will offer a totally different twist on your look! This look is ideal for a shorter wedding dress.

Wreath

If braids aren’t for you, consider a wreath wedding hairstyle. This look is ideal for brides who favour relaxed, boho-chic looks but don’t want loose curls blowing around and getting stuck in their lip gloss. Wreath wedding hairstyles pretty much demand fresh flower accessories!

“A wreath style bridal up-do would suit a bride looking for a relaxed, bohemian hair style. The style is easy to create. To get the best results, section off the hair and curl with a wand to create loose curls. Starting from one side of the head, twist the hair upwards from the nape of the neck, pinning in place with fine Kirby grips all along the back of the head, ensuring that they are concealed. Adorn with gypsophila or fresh flowers for the ultimate boho-look. This style would suit a wedding gown which is floaty and romantic, such as chiffon or vintage lace without too much structure. A veil can be incorporated into the style when pinned underneath the wreath so as not to cover the beautiful style and flowers,” explains Chloe from Makeup – Your Mind.

Afro

It can be more challenging to decide on a wedding hairstyle if you have afro hair. Malkia from Malkia Roberts advises: “I would suggest a classic/timeless chignon particularly for Autumn/Winter brides who may have a bolero or high neck dress.

“Middle partings makes it contemporary; keep it flat because Afro-Caribbean hair easily frizzes when there’s increased moisture in the air even with spray.

“Detail in your hair doesn’t have to be complexity, your style can be understated and polished, decorated with flowers; if you want to change your look in the evening, just change your flowers.”
